Title: A Geologist’s Guide to Spectral Remote Sensing

Time and Date: 16:00 BST / 17:00 CET / 11:00 EDT, 16th July 2025

Speakers: Alfie Baines

Spectral remote sensing is increasingly used throughout the mining life cycle, from early-stage regional and greenfield exploration, through deposit-scale exploration, to production and finally mine closure and monitoring. Satellite-based techniques in particular offer low risk, quick and cost-effective alternatives to some select workflows and procedures.

As more geologists are working with multi- and hyper-spectral data, whether analysing the data themselves or leaning on specialists to produce specific insights and reports, we need to ensure that workflows, results and caveats are well understood. The typical geologist should be able to engage in discussions around the design and implementation of spectral remote sensing surveys.

This webinar aims to give a simple introduction to the core concepts of spectral remote sensing in geology, discussing both theoretical and practical examples. It introduces new ways to think about spectral remote sensing, drawing parallels with geochemistry.
