GRSG Committee Profile
Holly Hourston

Holly is an Earth observation scientist working in the Geodesy and Remote Sensing team at the British Geological Survey, which she joined in 2023. Her academic background is in planetary science and astronomy, with her undergraduate thesis covering modelling future gravitational waves using Bayesian inference, and her postgraduate degree involving the study of indigenous and exogenous organic matter in carbonaceous chondrites.
Her wide-ranging skills in data and trend analysis, statistical approaches and machine learning are now being applied to Earth Observation datasets, primarily InSAR data, which she uses to monitor and model natural hazards in a wide range of Earth environments. In her role at the BGS, she works on a variety of projects assessing geohazard impacts on infrastructure, as well as vulnerable and exposed populations in the UK and overseas, in the context of multi-hazards, changing climate, and changing urban environments. She is passionate about using and communicating science for the public good, and anything and everything space-related!
One piece of advice?
Take every opportunity that comes your way, and try to take them with a positive mindset! I’ve found that associating yourself with good things often leads to good things coming back to you. If you just make that little bit of effort needed to get involved with new things, new experiences and/or new people, then positive situations and outcomes are much easier to come by in the future.
