Abstract Text:
Regulators and Operators within the energy sector are directly involved with the management of assets and infrastructure such as pipelines and benefit enormously from using more Earth Observation as an asset to accomplish their goals and to improve decision making. This can also help in support of enforcing clean and safe production and transportation of hydrocarbons, and responding rapidly and effectively when accidents, unfortunately, occur.
AVISAR initially began as an ESA funded Feasibility project which developed into a Demonstration project and completed in 2025. What became clear during the project was the continued need for information and insights and the value of different contextual information provided in the right way but also in the right timeframe. This means that the service also needs to be dynamic and responsive to the customer needs as much as it needs to be accessible and consistent in quality.
AVISAR provides the opportunity for wider context and understanding for operations and is directly related to both operational activity and safety focusing on solutions to meet those requirements onshore and offshore using optical and SAR as well as AIS etc. Such solutions make it possible to mitigate potentially dangerous and challenging situations by integrating earth observation into the monitoring protocols and therefore allowing for more targeted field follow up where needed and also reducing wider risk, especially in remote areas or those areas prone to vandalism which may be unsafe.
This presentation will share more details about how satellite solutions continue to support and improve towards ESG and operational monitoring requirements through AVISAR and beyond whilst also taking the opportunity to discuss its sister project DECOM focused on decommissioning of offshore assets and highlighting the value of EO across the oil and gas lifecycle.
